Theme for Filial Piety

FILIAL PIETY

filial piety in this story  defines as to be good to one's parents; to take care of one's parents; to engage in good conduct not just towards parents but also outside the home so as to bring a good name to one's parents and ancestors; to perform the duties of one's job well so as to obtain the material means to support parents as well as carry out sacrifices to the ancestors; not be rebellious; show love, respect and support; display courtesy; ensure male heirs, uphold fraternity among brothers; wisely advise one's parents, including dissuading them from moral unrighteousness; display sorrow for their sickness and death; and carry out sacrifices after their death.

In this story, surprisingly the filial piety was not shown by the son, but by the daughter. Usually the son is responsible for the parent’s well-being. If the parents are ageing and are incapable of taking care of themselves, the son is the one who should be responsible of them compare to the female siblings in the family. The son should be the breadwinner supporting his family regardless whether he is married or not. While the daughter if married has to follow their husband wills and only lends a helping hand if needed so. So, it must be difficult for them because they have to get their husband’s permission before make any decision. However, in this story, it is the other way around as Mrs. Wong is the one who took care of her dying mother despite that she has a responsibility towards her husband. While, Ah Kow who is the son neglected his responsibility towards his parents and doesn’t show the filial piety that he is supposed to.

Compare to the short story A Rose for Emily, the filial piety in this story was shown only by Emily because she was the only child in the family. She lives with her father and poured her love solely towards her father and took care of her father until her father’s death. As the story goes by, she obeys her father very much and when her father dies, it took her some time to accept it. She was reluctant to believe that her father had departed to another world.

The Jade bracelet ending.

This Is How The Jade Bracelet Suppose To End.

Suddenly words came from Ah Kow's mouth. He said "Siew May should take care of the bracelet".

"And why is that?", said Mrs. Wong as she packing their stuff and prepare to go home.

"Siew May is the one who deserved it more than I do".

"I repeat, AND WHY IS THAT? Is that because our mother was dead and you think you can simply disagree against me?  I can see you are tough enough now, mister!".

"No, i don't mean it that way. I'm sorry".

Siew May just went silent. And the conversation caught the other relatives attention.

"I believe in all of this stuff. The jade, the Qi, and our tradition." Fook Kee continued his word.

"But i think i don't deserve it."

"Explain your words, young man", said the half-boiled Mrs. Wong. She already turned red.

"In our family, I'm the black sheep. I am a lazy person. I hate to do something continuously. I even hate my job. I'm afraid I can't take care this legacy." said Ah Fook as he grabbed the bracelet hard.

"Yeah," said Siew May. "You can't even manage your own laundry."

"Your pyjamas is still on the suspension since the last three days." said one of the relatives.

"Fook Kee don't even wash the dishes after every single dinner unless Wong around to instruct him" another relative spoke out.

The other relatives began to whisper to each other. They also agreed that Ah Fook don't have a good appearance and described that he is not a good person to own the bracelet. They prefer Siew May to own that legacy because Siew May feed their ray finned mud-carp. This aquatic creature is so expensive.

Mrs. Wong was awed by Fook Kee  generosity and she suddenly cried.

"Ok, that is very persuasive. Fook Kee is right, you deserved this much better, my daughter"said Mrs. Wong. Siew May took out her "bob-cat" face. "Mother, forgive me. I will now give this legacy to the one you had intended to inherit it." Mrs.Wong whispered as she was cooling down.

"Hope that you, little girl, can take care this of this bracelet. I think this is what your grandma always wanted. Or probably, the bracelet chose you. You are the chosen one! Just like Anakin of the George Lucas's Star Wars! THE CHOSEN ONE!"said Fook Kee.  Mrs. Wong glanced. The other started to laugh.

So, Mrs. Wong gave it to Siew May and with a big smile. Siew May accept it.  All of the family members and relatives agrees that Siew May deserve the bracelet. "Now i got another"good" for my masak-masak." She giggled.

But Adri's ending is better.

After Mrs. Wong gave the bracelet to Fook Kee.

Suddenly unpredicted words came from Fook Kee's Mouth " You know who's really deserved this, right?". Mrs. Wong quickly starred at Siew May. But Mrs. Wong still insisted giving it to Fook Kee. "But she the one who really deserved this bracelet, also it's mother dying wish to give it to Siew May not me. Don't you want our mother to rest in peace?" after the conversation Fook Kee walk to Siew May. He handed her the bracelet and Fook Kee told Siew May to take care of the bracelet for him. Thus, He passed his responsibility to Siew May. Siew May promise to take care of the bracelet. Others was shocked by Fook Kee's decision. Fook Kee's said "it would be better this way".

Year passed, Siew May grow older and she still wore the same jade bracelet that her grandmother gave to her. She had give birth to a daughter and she planned on giving the jade bracelet to her as a legacy. Fook Kee became a successful person at that time because he had help from Siew May. Mrs. Wong live with Siew May because she was awfully ill.
